Meninajury-room,likethosescientificallydemonstratedatomsofacrystalwhichscientistsandphilosopherslovetospeculateupon,likefinallytoarrangethemselvesintoanorderlyandartisticwhole,topresentacompact,intellectualfront,tobewhatevertheyhavesetouttobe,properlyandrightly—acompact,sensiblejury.Oneseesthissameinstinctmagnificentlydisplayedineveryotherphaseofnature—inthedriftingofsea-woodtotheSargassoSea,inthegeometricinterrelationofair-bubblesonthesurfaceofstillwater,inthemarvelousunreasonedarchitectureofsomanyinsectsandatomicformswhichmakeupthesubstanceandthetextureofthisworld.Itwouldseemasthoughthephysicalsubstanceoflife—thisapparitionofformwhichtheeyedetectsandcallsrealwereshotthroughwithsomevastsubtletythatlovesorder,thatisorder.Theatomsofourso-calledbeing,inspiteofourso-calledreason—thedreamsofamood—knowwheretogoandwhattodo.Theyrepresentanorder,awisdom,awillingthatisnotofus.Theybuildorderlyinspiteofus.Sothesubconsciousspiritofajury.Atthesametime,onedoesnotforgetthestrangehypnoticeffectofonepersonalityonanother,thevaryingeffectsofvaryingtypesoneachother,untilasolution—tousethewordinitspurelychemicalsense—isreached.Inajury-roomthethoughtordeterminationofoneortwoorthreemen,ifitbedefiniteenough,islikelytopervadethewholeroomandconquerthereasonortheoppositionofthemajority.
