           "ShowinMissButler,"hesaid,gettingup."TellMr.Stirestowait."Aileencamebriskly,vigorouslyin,herbeautifulbodyclothedasdecorativelyasever.Thestreetsuitthatsheworewasofalightgolden-brownbroadcloth,facetedwithsmall,dark-redbuttons.Herheadwasdecoratedwithabrownish-redshakeofatypeshehadlearnedwasbecomingtoher,brimlessandwithatrailingplume,andherthroatwasgracedbyathree-strandnecklaceofgoldbeads.Herhandsweresmoothlyglovedasusual,andherlittlefeetdaintilyshod.Therewasalookofgirlishdistressinhereyes,which,however,shewastryinghardtoconceal.

           "Honey,"sheexclaimed,onseeinghim,herarmsextended"whatisthetrouble?Iwantedsomuchtoaskyoutheothernight.You’renotgoingtofail,areyou?IheardfatherandOwentalkingaboutyoulastnight."

           "Whatdidtheysay?"heinquired,puttinghisarmaroundherandlookingquietlyintohernervouseyes.

           "Oh,youknow,Ithinkpapaisveryangrywithyou.Hesuspects.Someonesenthimananonymousletter.Hetriedtogetitoutofmelastnight,buthedidn’tsucceed.Ideniedeverything.Iwasinheretwicethismorningtoseeyou,butyouwereout.Iwassoafraidthathemightseeyoufirst,andthatyoumightsaysomething."

           "Me,Aileen?"

           "Well,no,notexactly.Ididn’tthinkthat.Idon’tknowwhatIthought.Oh,honey,I’vebeensoworried.Youknow,Ididn’tsleepatall.
