           "Howdoyeknow,daughter,thatIhaven’thadthehousewatched?"hesaid,quizzically."Howdoyeknowthatyehaven’tbeenseengoin’inthere?"

           OnlyAileen’ssolemnpromisetoherlovercouldhavesavedherfromthissubtlethrust.Asitwas,shepalednervously;butshesawFrankCowperwood,solemnanddistinguished,askingherwhatshewouldsayifshewerecaught.

           "It’salie!"shesaid,catchingherbreath."Iwasn’tatanyhouseatthatnumber,andnoonesawmegoinginthere.Howcanyouaskmethat,father?"

           Inspiteofhismixedfeelingsofuncertaintyandyetunshakablebeliefthathisdaughterwasguilty,hecouldnothelpadmiringhercourageshewassodefiant,asshesatthere,sosetinherdeterminationtolieandthusdefendherself.Herbeautyhelpedherinhismood,raisedherinhisesteem.Afterall,whatcouldyoudowithawomanofthiskind?Shewasnotaten-year-oldgirlanymore,asinawayhesometimescontinuedtofancyher.

           "Yeoughtn’ttosaythatifitisn’ttrue,Aileen,"hesaid."Yeoughtn’ttolie.It’sagainstyourfaith.Whywouldanybodywritealetterlikethatifitwasn’tso?"

           "Butit’snotso,"insistedAileen,pretendingangerandoutragedfeeling,"andIdon’tthinkyouhaveanyrighttositthereandsaythattome.Ihaven’tbeenthere,andI’mnotrunningaroundwithMr.Cowperwood.Why,Ihardlyknowthemanexceptinasocialway."
