           Ascandalinconnectionwiththecitytreasurywouldbeaverybadthing.ItwouldendStener’scareerasanofficialwouldverylikelysendhimtothepenitentiary.ItmightwrecktheRepublicanparty’schancestowin.Itwouldcertainlyinvolvehimselfashavingmuchtodowithit.Ifthathappened,hewouldhavethepoliticianstoreckonwith.For,ifhewerehardpressed,ashewouldbe,andfailed,thefactthathehadbeentryingtoinvadethecitystreet-railwaypreserveswhichtheyheldsacredtothemselves,withborrowedcitymoney,andthatthisborrowingwasliabletocostthemthecityelection,wouldallcomeout.Theywouldnotviewallthatwithakindlyeye.Itwouldbeuselesstosay,ashecould,thathehadborrowedthemoneyattwopercent.(mostofit,tosavehimself,hadbeencoveredbyaprotectiveclauseofthatkind),orthathehadmerelyactedasanagentforStener.Thatmightgodownwiththeunsophisticatedoftheouterworld,butitwouldneverbeswallowedbythepoliticians.Theyknewbetterthanthat.
