           Aileenhadcreatedanimpressioninastreetcostumeofdarkbluesilkwithvelvetpelissetomatch,andtrimmedwithelaboratepleatingsandshirringsofthesamematerials.Atoqueofbluevelvet,withhighcrownandonelargedark-redimitationorchid,hadgivenherajaunty,dashingair.Beneaththetoqueherred-goldhairwasarrangedinanenormouschignon,withonelongcurlescapingoverhercollar.Shewasnotexactlyasdaringassheseemed,butshelovedtogivethatimpression.

           "Youlookwonderful,"Cowperwoodsaidasshepassedhim.

           "I’lllookdifferentto-night,"washeranswer.

           Shehadswungherselfwithaslight,swaggeringstrideintothedining-roomanddisappeared.NorahandhermotherstayedtochatwithMrs.Cowperwood.

           "Well,it’slovelynow,isn’tit?"breathedMrs.Butler."Sureyou’llbehappyhere.Sureyouwill.WhenEddiefixedthehousewe’reinnow,saysI:‘Eddie,it’salmosttoofineforusaltogethersurelyitis,’andhesays,says‘e,‘Norah,nothin’thissideo’heavinorbeyondistoogoodforye’—andhekissedme.Nowwhatd’yethinkofthatferabig,hulkin’gossoon?"

           "It’sperfectlylovely,Ithink,Mrs.Butler,"commentedMrs.Cowperwood,alittlebitnervousbecauseofothers.
