           ItwasthereforedecidedthattheafternoonreceptionatFrank’shouse,withitsnaturaloverflowintoHenryW.‘s,wastobeforalltheTighes,Steners,Butlers,Mollenhauers,aswellasthemoreselectgroupstowhich,forinstance,belongedArthurRivers,Mrs.SenecaDavis,Mr.andMrs.TrenorDrake,andsomeoftheyoungerDrexelsandClarks,whomFrankhadmet.Itwasnotlikelythatthelatterwouldcondescend,butcardshadtobesent.Laterintheeveningalessdemocraticgroupifpossiblewastobeentertained,albeititwouldhavetobeextendedtoincludethefriendsofAnna,Mrs.Cowperwood,Edward,andJoseph,andanylistwhichFrankmightpersonallyhaveinmind.Thiswastobethelist.Thebestthatcouldbepersuaded,commanded,orinfluencedoftheyoungandsociallyelectweretobeinvitedhere.

           Itwasnotpossible,however,nottoinvitetheButlers,parentsandchildren,particularlythechildren,forbothafternoonandevening,sinceCowperwoodwaspersonallyattractedtoAileenanddespitethefactthatthepresenceoftheparentswouldbemostunsatisfactory.EvenAileenasheknewwasalittleunsatisfactorytoAnnaandMrs.FrankCowperwood;andthesetwo,whentheyweretogethersupervisingthelistofinvitations,oftentalkedaboutit.
