Therewasalinethataweekbeforehewouldnothavefavoredwithasecondthought—"God’sownmadloverdyingonakiss"; butnowitwaseverinsistentinhismind. Hemarvelledatthewonderofitandthetruth; andashegazeduponherheknewthathecoulddiegladlyuponakiss. HefelthimselfGod’sownmadlover,andnoaccoladeofknighthoodcouldhavegivenhimgreaterpride. Andatlastheknewthemeaningoflifeandwhyhehadbeenborn.
Ashegazedatherandlistened,histhoughtsgrewdaring. Hereviewedallthewilddelightofthepressureofherhandinhisatthedoor,andlongedforitagain. Hisgazewanderedoftentowardherlips,andheyearnedforthemhungrily. Buttherewasnothinggrossorearthlyaboutthisyearning. Itgavehimexquisitedelighttowatcheverymovementandplayofthoselipsastheyenunciatedthewordsshespoke; yettheywerenotordinarylipssuchasallmenandwomenhad. Theirsubstancewasnotmerehumanclay. Theywerelipsofpurespirit,andhisdesireforthemseemedabsolutelydifferentfromthedesirethathadledhimtootherwomen’slips. Hecouldkissherlips,resthisownphysicallipsuponthem,butitwouldbewiththeloftyandawfulfervorwithwhichonewouldkisstherobeofGod. Hewasnotconsciousofthistransvaluationofvaluesthathadtakenplaceinhim,andwasunawarethatthelightthatshoneinhiseyeswhenhelookedatherwasquitethesamelightthatshinesinallmen’seyeswhenthedesireofloveisuponthem.
