           "How’dyehknow?" and,"My,ain’tchehamind-reader!"thegirlschorussed. 

           Andwhileheexchangedthestupiditiesofstupidmindswiththem,beforehisinnersighttoweredthebook-shelvesofthelibrary,filledwiththewisdomoftheages. Hesmiledbitterlyattheincongruityofit,andwasassailedbydoubts. Butbetweeninnervisionandoutwardpleasantryhefoundtimetowatchthetheatrecrowdstreamingby. AndthenhesawHer,underthelights,betweenherbrotherandthestrangeyoungmanwithglasses,andhisheartseemedtostandstill. Hehadwaitedlongforthismoment. Hehadtimetonotethelight,fluffysomethingthathidherqueenlyhead,thetastefullinesofherwrappedfigure,thegracefulnessofhercarriageandofthehandthatcaughtupherskirts; andthenshewasgoneandhewasleftstaringatthetwogirlsofthecannery,attheirtawdryattemptsatprettinessofdress,theirtragiceffortstobecleanandtrim,thecheapcloth,thecheapribbons,andthecheapringsonthefingers. Hefeltatugathisarm,andheardavoicesaying:- 

           "Wakeup,Bill! What’sthematterwithyou?" "Whatwasyousayin’?"heasked.
