           Theblack-eyedgirlsmiledgratificationandgreeting,andshowedsignsofstopping,whilehercompanion,armlinkedinarm,giggledandlikewiseshowedsignsofhalting. Hethoughtquickly. ItwouldneverdoforHertocomeoutandseehimtalkingtherewiththem. Quitenaturally,asamatterofcourse,heswunginalong-sidethedark-eyedoneandwalkedwithher. Therewasnoawkwardnessonhispart,nonumbtongue. Hewasathomehere,andheheldhisownroyallyinthebadinage,bristlingwithslangandsharpness,thatwasalwaysthepreliminarytogettingacquaintedintheseswift-movingaffairs. Atthecornerwherethemainstreamofpeopleflowedonward,hestartedtoedgeoutintothecrossstreet. Butthegirlwiththeblackeyescaughthisarm,followinghimanddragginghercompanionafterher,asshecried: 

           "Holdon,Bill! What’syerrush? You’renotgoin’toshakeussosuddenasallthat?"

           "Youaskher,"wastheconvulsedresponse. 

           "Well,whatisit?"hedemanded,turningsquarelyonthegirlinquestion. 

           "Youain’ttoldmeyours,yet,"sheretorted. "Youneveraskedit,"hesmiled. "Besides,youguessedthefirstrattle. It’sBill,allright,allright."
