           ThedaytheMariposaenteredthedoldrums,Martinwasmoremiserablethanever. Hecouldnolongersleep. Hewassoakedwithsleep,andperforcehemustnowstayawakeandendurethewhiteglareoflife. Hemovedaboutrestlessly. Theairwasstickyandhumid,andtherain-squallswereunrefreshing. Heachedwithlife. Hewalkedaroundthedeckuntilthathurttoomuch,thensatinhischairuntilhewascompelledtowalkagain. Heforcedhimselfatlasttofinishthemagazine,andfromthesteamerlibraryheculledseveralvolumesofpoetry. Buttheycouldnotholdhim,andoncemorehetooktowalking. 

           Hestayedlateondeck,afterdinner,butthatdidnothelphim,forwhenhewentbelow,hecouldnotsleep. Thissurceasefromlifehadfailedhim. Itwastoomuch. Heturnedontheelectriclightandtriedtoread. OneofthevolumeswasaSwinburne. Helayinbed,glancingthroughitspages,untilsuddenlyhebecameawarethathewasreadingwithinterest. Hefinishedthestanza,attemptedtoreadon,thencamebacktoit. Herestedthebookfacedownwardonhisbreastandfelltothinking. Thatwasit. Theverything. Strangethatithadnevercometohimbefore.
