Tohissurpriseacheckforthatamount,accompaniedbyacontract,camebyreturnmail. Hecashedthecheckintofive-dollargoldpiecesandtelephonedGertrudethathewantedtoseeher.
Shearrivedatthehousepantingandshortofbreathfromthehasteshehadmade. Apprehensiveoftrouble,shehadstuffedthefewdollarsshepossessedintoherhand-satchel; andsosurewasshethatdisasterhadovertakenherbrother,thatshestumbledforward,sobbing,intohisarms,atthesametimethrustingthesatchelmutelyathim.
"I’dhavecomemyself,"hesaid. "ButIdidn’twantarowwithMr.Higginbotham,andthatiswhatwouldhavesurelyhappened."
