Heanchoredhisfaithtothat,andwasconfidentthatthereallyfirst-classmagazineswouldpayanunknownwriteratleastanequalrate,ifnotabetterone. Butthethingwas,howtogetintothefirst-classmagazines. Hisbeststories,essays,andpoemswentbeggingamongthem,andyet,eachmonth,hereadreamsofdull,prosy,inartisticstuffbetweenalltheirvariouscovers. Ifonlyoneeditor,hesometimesthought,woulddescendfromhishighseatofpridetowritemeonecheeringline! Nomatterifmyworkisunusual,nomatterifitisunfit,forprudentialreasons,fortheirpages,surelytheremustbesomesparksinit,somewhere,afew,towarmthemtosomesortofappreciation. Andthereuponhewouldgetoutoneoranotherofhismanuscripts,suchas"Adventure,"andreaditoverandoverinavainattempttovindicatetheeditorialsilence.
