           Ontheotherhand,hehadnotsacrificedstrength. Hisconsciousaimhadbeentoincreasehisstrengthbyavoidingexcessofstrength. Norhadhedepartedfromhisloveofreality. Hisworkwasrealism,thoughhehadendeavoredtofusewithitthefanciesandbeautiesofimagination. Whathesoughtwasanimpassionedrealism,shotthroughwithhumanaspirationandfaith. Whathewantedwaslifeasitwas,withallitsspirit-gropingandsoul-reachingleftin. 

           Hehaddiscovered,inthecourseofhisreading,twoschoolsoffiction. Onetreatedofmanasagod,ignoringhisearthlyorigin; theothertreatedofmanasaclod,ignoringhisheaven-sentdreamsanddivinepossibilities. Boththegodandtheclodschoolserred,inMartin’sestimation,anderredthroughtoogreatsinglenessofsightandpurpose. Therewasacompromisethatapproximatedthetruth,thoughitflatterednottheschoolofgod,whileitchallengedthebrute-savagenessoftheschoolofclod. Itwashisstory,"Adventure,"whichhaddraggedwithRuth,thatMartinbelievedhadachievedhisidealofthetrueinfiction; anditwasinanessay,"GodandClod,"thathehadexpressedhisviewsonthewholegeneralsubject. 

           But"Adventure,"andallthathedeemedhisbestwork,stillwentbeggingamongtheeditors. Hisearlyworkcountedfornothinginhiseyesexceptforthemoneyitbrought,andhishorrorstories,twoofwhichhehadsold,hedidnotconsiderhighworknorhisbestwork.
