           Andinthemomentthatfollowed,whenhecrushedherinhisarms,thebrainofher,concernedwiththesuperficialaspectsoflife,wasinrevolt; whiletheheartofher,thewomanofher,concernedwithlifeitself,exultedtriumphantly. ItwasinmomentslikethisthatshefelttotheuttermostthegreatnessofherloveforMartin,foritwasalmostaswoonofdelighttohertofeelhisstrongarmsabouther,holdinghertightly,hurtingherwiththegripoftheirfervor. Atsuchmomentsshefoundjustificationforhertreasontoherstandards,forherviolationofherownhighideals,and,mostofall,forhertacitdisobediencetohermotherandfather. Theydidnotwanthertomarrythisman. Itshockedthemthatsheshouldlovehim. Itshockedher,too,sometimes,whenshewasapartfromhim,acoolandreasoningcreature. Withhim,shelovedhimintruth,attimesavexedandworriedlove; butloveitwas,alovethatwasstrongerthanshe.
