Hedissectedbeautyinhiscrowdedlittlebedroomlaboratory,wherecookingsmellsalternatedwiththeouterbedlamoftheSilvatribe;and,havingdissectedandlearnedtheanatomyofbeauty,hewasnearerbeingabletocreatebeautyitself.
Hewassomadethathecouldworkonlywithunderstanding. Hecouldnotworkblindly,inthedark,ignorantofwhathewasproducingandtrustingtochanceandthestarofhisgeniusthattheeffectproducedshouldberightandfine. Hehadnopatiencewithchanceeffects. Hewantedtoknowwhyandhow. Hiswasdeliberatecreativegenius,and,beforehebeganastoryorpoem,thethingitselfwasalreadyaliveinhisbrain,withtheendinsightandthemeansofrealizingthatendinhisconsciouspossession. Otherwisetheeffortwasdoomedtofailure. Ontheotherhand,heappreciatedthechanceeffectsinwordsandphrasesthatcamelightlyandeasilyintohisbrain,andthatlaterstoodalltestsofbeautyandpoweranddevelopedtremendousandincommunicableconnotations. Beforesuchheboweddownandmarvelled,knowingthattheywerebeyondthedeliberatecreationofanyman. Andnomatterhowmuchhedissectedbeautyinsearchoftheprinciplesthatunderliebeautyandmakebeautypossible,hewasaware,always,oftheinnermostmysteryofbeautytowhichhedidnotpenetrateandtowhichnomanhadeverpenetrated.
