           "Iwonderifyou’lllikewhatIhavedone!"hesaidtoRuthseveraldayslater. "I’vedecidedthatboardingwithmysisteristooexpensive,andIamgoingtoboardmyself. I’verentedalittleroomoutinNorthOakland,retiredneighborhoodandalltherest,youknow,andI’veboughtanoil-burneronwhichtocook." 

           Ruthwasoverjoyed. Theoil-burnerespeciallypleasedher. 

           "ThatwasthewayMr.Butlerbeganhisstart,"shesaid. 

           Martinfrownedinwardlyatthecitationofthatworthygentleman,andwenton:"Iputstampsonallmymanuscriptsandstartedthemofftotheeditorsagain. Thento-dayImovedin,andto-morrowIstarttowork." 

           "Aposition!"shecried,betrayingthegladnessofhersurpriseinallherbody,nestlingclosertohim,pressinghishand,smiling. "Andyounevertoldme! Whatisit?" 

           Heshookhishead. 

           "ImeantthatIwasgoingtoworkatmywriting." Herfacefell,andhewentonhastily. "Don’tmisjudgeme. Iamnotgoinginthistimewithanyiridescentideas. Itistobeacold,prosaic,matter-of-factbusinessproposition. Itisbetterthangoingtoseaagain,andIshallearnmoremoneythananypositioninOaklandcanbringanunskilledman." 

           "Yousee,thisvacationIhavetakenhasgivenmeperspective. Ihaven’tbeenworkingthelifeoutofmybody,andIhaven’tbeenwriting,atleastnotforpublication. AllI’vedonehasbeentoloveyouandtothink. I’vereadsome,too,butithasbeenpartofmythinking,andIhavereadprincipallymagazines.
