           Martintookabath,afterwhichhefoundthattheheadlaundrymanhaddisappeared. MostlikelyhehadgoneforaglassofbeerMartindecided,butthehalf-milewalkdowntothevillagetofindoutseemedalongjourneytohim. Helayonhisbedwithhisshoesoff,tryingtomakeuphismind. Hedidnotreachoutforabook. Hewastootiredtofeelsleepy,andhelay,scarcelythinking,inasemi-stuporofweariness,untilitwastimeforsupper. Joedidnotappearforthatfunction,andwhenMartinheardthegardenerremarkthatmostlikelyhewasrippingtheslatsoffthebar,Martinunderstood. Hewenttobedimmediatelyafterward,andinthemorningdecidedthathewasgreatlyrested. Joebeingstillabsent,MartinprocuredaSundaypaperandlaydowninashadynookunderthetrees. Themorningpassed,heknewnothow. Hedidnotsleep,nobodydisturbedhim,andhedidnotfinishthepaper. Hecamebacktoitintheafternoon,afterdinner,andfellasleepoverit. 

           SopassedSunday,andMondaymorninghewashardatwork,sortingclothes,whileJoe,atowelboundtightlyaroundhishead,withgroansandblasphemies,wasrunningthewasherandmixingsoft-soap.
