           Hesawthetwogangs,aggressiveandsullen,rigidlykeepingapartfromeachotherandbackingtheirrespectivechampions; andhesawhimselfandCheese-Facestripping. Ashortdistanceawaylookoutswereset,theirtaskbeingtowatchthelightedendsofthebridge. AmemberoftheBooGangheldMartin’scoat,andshirt,andcap,readytoracewiththemintosafetyincasethepoliceinterfered. Martinwatchedhimselfgointothecentre,facingCheese-Face,andheheardhimselfsay,ashehelduphishandwarningly:- 

           "Theyain’tnohand-shakin’inthis. Understand? Theyain’tnothin’butscrap. Nothrowin’upthesponge. Thisisagrudge-fightan’it’stoafinish. Understand? Somebody’sgoin’togetlicked." 

           Cheese-Facewantedtodemur,Martincouldseethat,butCheese-Face’soldperilouspridewastouchedbeforethetwogangs. 

           "Aw,comeon,"hereplied. "Wot’sthegoodofchewin’deragaboutit? I’mwit’chehtodefinish." 

           Thentheyfelluponeachother,likeyoungbulls,inallthegloryofyouth,withnakedfists,withhatred,withdesiretohurt,tomaim,todestroy. Allthepainful,thousandyears’gainsofmaninhisupwardclimbthroughcreationwerelost. Onlytheelectriclightremained,amilestoneonthepathofthegreathumanadventure. MartinandCheese-Faceweretwosavages,ofthestoneage,ofthesquattingplaceandthetreerefuge.
