Astreamofshortstoriesflowedfromhispen,andhebranchedoutintotheeasierformsofverse—thekindhesawprintedinthemagazines—thoughhelosthisheadandwastedtwoweeksonatragedyinblankverse,theswiftrejectionofwhich,byhalfadozenmagazines,dumfoundedhim. ThenhediscoveredHenleyandwroteaseriesofsea-poemsonthemodelof"HospitalSketches." Theyweresimplepoems,oflightandcolor,andromanceandadventure. "SeaLyrics,"hecalledthem,andhejudgedthemtobethebestworkhehadyetdone. Therewerethirty,andhecompletedtheminamonth,doingoneadayafterhavingdonehisregularday’sworkonfiction,whichday’sworkwastheequivalenttoaweek’sworkoftheaveragesuccessfulwriter. Thetoilmeantnothingtohim. Itwasnottoil. Hewasfindingspeech,andallthebeautyandwonderthathadbeenpentforyearsbehindhisinarticulatelipswasnowpouringforthinawildandvirileflood.
Heshowedthe"SeaLyrics"tonoone,noteventotheeditors. Hehadbecomedistrustfulofeditors. Butitwasnotdistrustthatpreventedhimfromsubmittingthe"Lyrics." TheyweresobeautifultohimthathewasimpelledtosavethemtosharewithRuthinsomeglorious,far-offtimewhenhewoulddaretoreadtoherwhathehadwritten. Againstthattimehekeptthemwithhim,readingthemaloud,goingoverthemuntilheknewthembyheart.
