           Elizabethwassurprised,butagreedtoitimmediately. MissBingleysucceedednolessintherealobjectofhercivility;Mr.Darcylookedup. HewasasmuchawaketothenoveltyofattentioninthatquarterasElizabethherselfcouldbe,andunconsciouslyclosedhisbook. Hewasdirectlyinvitedtojointheirparty,buthedeclinedit,observingthathecouldimaginebuttwomotivesfortheirchoosingtowalkupanddowntheroomtogether,witheitherofwhichmotiveshisjoiningthemwouldinterfere. "Whatcouldhemean? Shewasdyingtoknowwhatcouldbehismeaning?"andaskedElizabethwhethershecouldatallunderstandhim?
