           Elizabethfeltherselfgrowingmoreangryeverymoment; yetshetriedtotheutmosttospeakwithcomposurewhenshesaid: 

           "Youaremistaken,Mr.Darcy,ifyousupposethatthemodeofyourdeclarationaffectedmeinanyotherway,thanasitsparedtheconcernwhichImighthavefeltinrefusingyou,hadyoubehavedinamoregentlemanlikemanner." 

           Shesawhimstartatthis,buthesaidnothing,andshecontinued: 

           "Youcouldnothavemadetheofferofyourhandinanypossiblewaythatwouldhavetemptedmetoacceptit." 

           Againhisastonishmentwasobvious;andhelookedatherwithanexpressionofmingledincredulityandmortification.Shewenton: 

           "Fromtheverybeginningfromthefirstmoment,Imayalmostsayofmyacquaintancewithyou,yourmanners,impressingmewiththefullestbeliefofyourarrogance,yourconceit,andyourselfishdisdainofthefeelingsofothers,weresuchastoformthegroundworkofdisapprobationonwhichsucceedingeventshavebuiltsoimmovableadislike; andIhadnotknownyouamonthbeforeIfeltthatyouwerethelastmanintheworldwhomIcouldeverbeprevailedontomarry." 

           "Youhavesaidquiteenough,madam. Iperfectlycomprehendyourfeelings,andhavenowonlytobeashamedofwhatmyownhavebeen. Forgivemeforhavingtakenupsomuchofyourtime,andacceptmybestwishesforyourhealthandhappiness." 

           Andwiththesewordshehastilylefttheroom,andElizabethheardhimthenextmomentopenthefrontdoorandquitthehouse.
