ElizabethhadheardsoonafterherarrivalthatMr.Darcywasexpectedthereinthecourseofafewweeks,andthoughtherewerenotmanyofheracquaintanceswhomshedidnotprefer,hiscomingwouldfurnishonecomparativelynewtolookatintheirRosingsparties, andshemightbeamusedinseeinghowhopelessMissBingley’sdesignsonhimwere,byhisbehaviourtohiscousin,forwhomhewasevidentlydestinedbyLadyCatherine,whotalkedofhiscomingwiththegreatestsatisfaction,spokeofhimintermsofthehighestadmiration,andseemedalmostangrytofindthathehadalreadybeenfrequentlyseenbyMissLucasandherself.
HisarrivalwassoonknownattheParsonage;forMr.CollinswaswalkingthewholemorningwithinviewofthelodgesopeningintoHunsfordLane,inordertohavetheearliestassuranceofit,andaftermakinghisbowasthecarriageturnedintothePark,hurriedhomewiththegreatintelligence. OnthefollowingmorninghehastenedtoRosingstopayhisrespects. ThereweretwonephewsofLadyCatherinetorequirethem,forMr.DarcyhadbroughtwithhimaColonelFitzwilliam,theyoungersonofhisuncleLord——and,tothegreatsurpriseofalltheparty,whenMr.Collinsreturned,thegentlemanaccompaniedhim. Charlottehadseenthemfromherhusband’sroom,crossingtheroad,andimmediatelyrunningintotheother,toldthegirlswhatanhonourtheymightexpect,adding:

Elizabethhadscarcelytimetodisclaimallrighttothecompliment,beforetheirapproachwasannouncedbythedoor-bell,andshortlyafterwardsthethreegentlemenenteredtheroom.
