Butthere,ashewasalightingfromhishorseatthegateoftheJollyMiller,withoutanyone—host,waiter,orhostler—comingtoholdhisstirruportakehishorse,d’Artagnanspied,thoughanopenwindowonthegroundfloor,agentleman,well-madeandofgoodcarriage,althoughofratherasterncountenance,talkingwithtwopersonswhoappearedtolistentohimwithrespect.d’Artagnanfanciedquitenaturally,accordingtohiscustom,thathemustbetheobjectoftheirconversation,andlistened.Thistimed’Artagnanwasonlyinpartmistaken;hehimselfwasnotinquestion,buthishorsewas.
