A Procurator’s Dinner

           "Itismycousin!"criedtheprocurator’swife."Comein,comein,MonsieurPorthos!"

           ThenameofPorthosproduceditseffectupontheclerks,whobegantolaugh;butPorthosturnedsharplyround,andeverycountenancequicklyrecovereditsgravity.

           Theyreachedtheofficeoftheprocuratorafterhavingpassedthroughtheantechamberinwhichtheclerkswere,andthestudyinwhichtheyoughttohavebeen.Thislastapartmentwasasortofdarkroom,litteredwithpapers.Onquittingthestudytheyleftthekitchenontheright,andenteredthereceptionroom.

           Alltheserooms,whichcommunicatedwithoneanother,didnotinspirePorthosfavorably.Wordsmightbeheardatadistancethroughalltheseopendoors.
