Onthelandingtheywerenolongerfighting,butamusedthemselveswithstoriesaboutwomen,andintheantechamber,withstoriesaboutthecourt.Onthelandingd’Artagnanblushed;intheantechamberhetrembled.Hiswarmandfickleimagination,whichinGasconyhadrenderedformidabletoyoungchambermaids,andevensometimestheirmistresses,hadneverdreamed,eveninmomentsofdelirium,ofhalftheamorouswondersoraquarterofthefeatsofgallantrywhichwereheresetforthinconnectionwithnamesthebestknownandwithdetailstheleastconcealed.Butifhismoralswereshockedonthelanding,hisrespectforthecardinalwasscandalizedintheantechamber.There,tohisgreatastonishment,d’ArtagnanheardthepolicywhichmadeallEuropetremblecriticizedaloudandopenly,aswellastheprivatelifeofthecardinal,whichsomanygreatnobleshadbeenpunishedfortryingtopryinto.
