Itiswellknownhowviolenttheking’sprejudiceswereagainstthequeen,andhowcarefullytheseprejudiceswerekeptupbythecardinal,whoinaffairsofintriguemistrustedwomeninfinitelymorethanmen.OneofthegrandcausesofthisprejudicewasthefriendshipofAnneofAustriaforMme.deChevreuse.ThesetwowomengavehimmoreuneasinessthanthewarwithSpain,thequarrelwithEngland,ortheembarrassmentofthefinances.Inhiseyesandtohisconviction,Mme.deChevreusenotonlyservedthequeeninherpoliticalintrigues,but,whattormentedhimstillmore,inheramorousintrigues.
AtthefirstwordthecardinalspokeofMme.deChevreuse—who,thoughexiledtoToursandbelievedtobeinthatcity,hadcometoParis,remainedtherefivedays,andoutwittedthepolice—thekingflewintoafuriouspassion.
