Placedwherehewas,d’ArtagnancouldnotperceivethefaceofAramis.WesayAramis,becausetheyoungmanentertainednodoubtthatitwashisfriendwhoheldthisdialoguefromtheinteriorwiththeladyoftheexterior.Curiosityprevailedoverprudence;andprofitingbythepreoccupationintowhichthesightofthehandkerchiefappearedtohaveplungedthetwopersonagesnowonthescene,hestolefromhishidingplace,andquickaslightning,butsteppingwithutmostcaution,heranandplacedhimselfclosetotheangleofthewall,fromwhichhiseyecouldpiercetheinteriorofAramis’sroom.
Upongainingthisadvantaged’Artagnanwasnearutteringacryofsurprise;itwasnotAramiswhowasconversingwiththenocturnalvisitor,itwasawoman!D’Artagnan,however,couldonlyseeenoughtorecognizetheformofhervestments,notenoughtodistinguishherfeatures.
Atthesameinstantthewomaninsidedrewasecondhandkerchieffromherpocket,andexchangeditforthatwhichhadjustbeenshowntoher.Thensomewordswerespokenbythetwowomen.Atlengththeshutterclosed.
