           Sincethedaybythepondwhenshehadrefusedtolistentohispleaforforgiveness,Gilbert,savefortheaforesaiddeterminedrivalry,hadevincednorecognitionwhateveroftheexistenceofAnneShirley.Hetalkedandjestedwiththeothergirls,exchangedbooksandpuzzleswiththem,discussedlessonsandplans,sometimeswalkedhomewithoneortheotherofthemfromprayermeetingorDebatingClub.ButAnneShirleyhesimplyignored,andAnnefoundoutthatitisnotpleasanttobeignored.Itwasinvainthatshetoldherselfwithatossofherheadthatshedidnotcare.Deepdowninherwayward,femininelittleheartsheknewthatshedidcare,andthatifshehadthatchanceoftheLakeofShiningWatersagainshewouldanswerverydifferently.Allatonce,asitseemed,andtohersecretdismay,shefoundthattheoldresentmentshehadcherishedagainsthimwasgone—gonejustwhenshemostneededitssustainingpower.Itwasinvainthatsherecalledeveryincidentandemotionofthatmemorableoccasionandtriedtofeeltheoldsatisfyinganger.Thatdaybythepondhadwitnesseditslastspasmodicflicker.
