           ShewassittingthereoneafternooninearlyJune.Thesunwascominginatthewindowwarmandbright;theorchardontheslopebelowthehousewasinabridalflushofpinky-whitebloom,hummedoverbyamyriadofbees.ThomasLynde—ameeklittlemanwhomAvonleapeoplecalled“RachelLynde’shusband”—wassowinghislateturnipseedonthehillfieldbeyondthebarn;andMatthewCuthbertoughttohavebeensowinghisonthebigredbrookfieldawayoverbyGreenGables.Mrs.RachelknewthatheoughtbecauseshehadheardhimtellPeterMorrisontheeveningbeforeinWilliamJ.Blair’sstoreoveratCarmodythathemeanttosowhisturnipseedthenextafternoon.Peterhadaskedhim,ofcourse,forMatthewCuthberthadneverbeenknowntovolunteerinformationaboutanythinginhiswholelife.
