           ThetwolittlegirlshastenedouthandinhandandhurriedthroughLover’sLaneandacrossthecrustedfieldbeyond,forthesnowwastoodeeptogobytheshorterwoodway.Anne,althoughsincerelysorryforMinnieMay,wasfarfrombeinginsensibletotheromanceofthesituationandtothesweetnessofoncemoresharingthatromancewithakindredspirit.

           Thenightwasclearandfrosty,allebonyofshadowandsilverofsnowyslope;bigstarswereshiningoverthesilentfields;hereandtherethedarkpointedfirsstoodupwithsnowpowderingtheirbranchesandthewindwhistlingthroughthem.Annethoughtitwastrulydelightfultogoskimmingthroughallthismysteryandlovelinesswithyourbosomfriendwhohadbeensolongestranged.

           MinnieMay,agedthree,wasreallyverysick.Shelayonthekitchensofafeverishandrestless,whileherhoarsebreathingcouldbeheardalloverthehouse.YoungMaryJoe,abuxom,broad-facedFrenchgirlfromthecreek,whomMrs.Barryhadengagedtostaywiththechildrenduringherabsence,washelplessandbewildered,quiteincapableofthinkingwhattodo,ordoingitifshethoughtofit.

           Annewenttoworkwithskillandpromptness.
