Soonaftermymistresscameintotheroom,whoseeingmeallbloody,ranandtookmeupinherhand.Ipointedtothedeadrat,smiling,andmakingothersignstoshowIwasnothurt;whereatshewasextremelyrejoiced,callingthemaidtotakeupthedeadratwithapairoftongs,andthrowitoutofthewindow.Thenshesetmeonatable,whereIshowedhermyhangerallbloody,andwipingitonthelappetofmycoat,returnedittothescabbard.Iwaspressedtodomorethanonethingwhichanothercouldnotdoforme,andthereforeendeavouredtomakemymistressunderstand,thatIdesiredtobesetdownonthefloor;whichaftershehaddone,mybashfulnesswouldnotsuffermetoexpressmyselffarther,thanbypointingtothedoor,andbowingseveraltimes.Thegoodwoman,withmuchdifficulty,atlastperceivedwhatIwouldbeat,andtakingmeupagaininherhand,walkedintothegarden,whereshesetmedown.Iwentononesideabouttwohundredyards,andbeckoningtohernottolookortofollowme,Ihidmyselfbetweentwoleavesofsorrel,andtheredischargedthenecessitiesofnature.
Ihopethegentlereaderwillexcusemefordwellingontheseandthelikeparticulars,which,howeverinsignificanttheymayappeartogrovelingvulgarminds,yetwillcertainlyhelpaphilosophertoenlargehisthoughtsandimagination,andapplythemtothebenefitofpublicaswellasprivatelife,whichwasmysoledesigninpresentingthisandotheraccountsofmytravelstotheworld;whereinIhavebeenchieflystudiousoftruth,withoutaffectinganyornamentsoflearningorofstyle.Butthewholesceneofthisvoyagemadesostronganimpressiononmymind,andissodeeplyfixedinmymemory,that,incommittingittopaperIdidnotomitonematerialcircumstance:however,uponastrictreview,Iblottedoutseveralpassages.
