Thustheyoungladiesareasmuchashamedofbeingcowardsandfoolsasthemen,anddespiseallpersonalornaments,beyonddecencyandcleanliness:neitherdidIperceiveanydifferenceintheireducationmadebytheirdifferenceofsex,onlythattheexercisesofthefemaleswerenotaltogethersorobust;andthatsomerulesweregiventhemrelatingtodomesticlife,andasmallercompassoflearningwasenjoinedthem:fortheirmaximis,thatamongpeoplesofquality,awifeshouldbealwaysareasonableandagreeablecompanion,becauseshecannotalwaysbeyoung.Whenthegirlsaretwelveyearsold,whichamongthemisthemarriageableage,theirparentsorguardianstakethemhome,withgreatexpressionsofgratitudetotheprofessors,andseldomwithouttearsoftheyoungladyandhercompanions.
Inthenurseriesoffemalesofthemeanersort,thechildrenareinstructedinallkindsofworksproperfortheirsex,andtheirseveraldegrees:thoseintendedforapprenticesaredismissedatsevenyearsold,therestarekepttoeleven.
Themeanerfamilieswhohavechildrenatthesenurseries,areobliged,besidestheirannualpension,whichisaslowaspossible,toreturntothestewardofthenurseryasmallmonthlyshareoftheirgettings,tobeaportionforthechild;andthereforeallparentsarelimitedintheirexpensesbythelaw.FortheLilliputiansthinknothingcanbemoreunjust,thanforpeople,insubserviencetotheirownappetites,tobringchildrenintotheworld,andleavetheburthenofsupportingthemonthepublic.Astopersonsofquality,theygivesecuritytoappropriateacertainsumforeachchild,suitabletotheircondition;andthesefundsarealwaysmanagedwithgoodhusbandryandthemostexactjustice.
