Theyaredressedbymentillfouryearsofage,andthenareobligedtodressthemselves,althoughtheirqualitybeeversogreat;andthewomenattendant,whoareagedproportionablytooursatfifty,performonlythemostmenialoffices.Theyareneversufferedtoconversewithservants,butgotogetherinsmallerorgreaternumberstotaketheirdiversions,andalwaysinthepresenceofaprofessor,oroneofhisdeputies;wherebytheyavoidthoseearlybadimpressionsoffollyandvice,towhichourchildrenaresubject.Theirparentsaresufferedtoseethemonlytwiceayear;thevisitistolastbutanhour;theyareallowedtokissthechildatmeetingandparting;butaprofessor,whoalwaysstandsbyonthoseoccasions,willnotsufferthemtowhisper,oruseanyfondlingexpressions,orbringanypresentsoftoys,sweetmeats,andthelike.
Thepensionfromeachfamilyfortheeducationandentertainmentofachild,uponfailureofduepayment,isleviedbytheemperor’sofficers.
Thenurseriesforchildrenofordinarygentlemen,merchants,traders,andhandicrafts,aremanagedproportionablyafterthesamemanner;onlythosedesignedfortradesareputoutapprenticesatelevenyearsold,whereasthoseofpersonsofqualitycontinueintheirexercisestillfifteen,whichanswerstotwenty-onewithus:buttheconfinementisgraduallylessenedforthelastthreeyears.
Inthefemalenurseries,theyounggirlsofqualityareeducatedmuchlikethemales,onlytheyaredressedbyorderlyservantsoftheirownsex;butalwaysinthepresenceofaprofessorordeputy,tilltheycometodressthemselves,whichisatfiveyearsold.Andifitbefoundthatthesenurseseverpresumetoentertainthegirlswithfrightfulorfoolishstories,orthecommonfolliespractisedbychambermaidsamongus,theyarepubliclywhippedthriceaboutthecity,imprisonedforayear,andbanishedforlifetothemostdesolatepartofthecountry.
