           Hismajesty,inanotheraudience,wasatthepainstorecapitulatethesumofallIhadspoken;comparedthequestionshemadewiththeanswersIhadgiven;thentakingmeintohishands,andstrokingmegently,deliveredhimselfinthesewords,whichIshallneverforget,northemannerhespokethemin:"MylittlefriendGrildrig,youhavemadeamostadmirablepanegyricuponyourcountry;youhaveclearlyproved,thatignorance,idleness,andvice,aretheproperingredientsforqualifyingalegislator;thatlawsarebestexplained,interpreted,andapplied,bythosewhoseinterestandabilitieslieinperverting,confounding,andeludingthem.Iobserveamongyousomelinesofaninstitution,which,initsoriginal,mighthavebeentolerable,butthesehalferased,andtherestwhollyblurredandblottedbycorruptions.Itdoesnotappear,fromallyouhavesaid,howanyoneperfectionisrequiredtowardtheprocurementofanyonestationamongyou;muchless,thatmenareennobledonaccountoftheirvirtue;thatpriestsareadvancedfortheirpietyorlearning;soldiers,fortheirconductorvalour;judges,fortheirintegrity;senators,fortheloveoftheircountry;orcounsellorsfortheirwisdom.
