forIsoonbegantobeknownandesteemedamongthegreatestofficers,Isupposemoreuponaccountoftheirmajesties’favour,thananymeritofmyown.Injourneys,whenIwaswearyofthecoach,aservantonhorsebackwouldbuckleonmybox,andplaceituponacushionbeforehim;andthereIhadafullprospectofthecountryonthreesides,frommythreewindows.Ihad,inthiscloset,afield-bedandahammock,hungfromtheceiling,twochairsandatable,neatlyscrewedtothefloor,topreventbeingtossedaboutbytheagitationofthehorseorthecoach.Andhavingbeenlongusedtosea-voyages,thosemotions,althoughsometimesveryviolent,didnotmuchdiscomposeme.
WheneverIhadamindtoseethetown,itwasalwaysinmytravelling-closet;whichGlumdalclitchheldinherlapinakindofopensedan,afterthefashionofthecountry,bornebyfourmen,andattendedbytwoothersinthequeen’slivery.Thepeople,whohadoftenheardofme,wereverycurioustocrowdaboutthesedan,andthegirlwascomplaisantenoughtomakethebearersstop,andtotakemeinherhand,thatImightbemoreconvenientlyseen.
Iwasverydesiroustoseethechieftemple,andparticularlythetowerbelongingtoit,whichisreckonedthehighestinthekingdom.Accordinglyonedaymynursecarriedmethither,butImaytrulysayIcamebackdisappointed;fortheheightisnotabovethreethousandfeet,reckoningfromthegroundtothehighestpinnacletop;which,allowingforthedifferencebetweenthesizeofthosepeopleandusinEurope,isnogreatmatterforadmiration,noratallequalinproportion(ifIrightlyremember)toSalisburysteeple.But,nottodetractfromanation,towhich,duringmylife,Ishallacknowledgemyselfextremelyobliged,itmustbeallowed,thatwhateverthisfamoustowerwantsinheight,isamplymadeupinbeautyandstrength:
