           "Yes,"repliedDickSand,"anditwillcarryustothecoast.Bereassured,then,Mrs.Weldon;thewatercannotreachyou,norlittleJack,norNan,norMr.Benedict."

           Mrs.Weldondidnotreply.Astothecousin,hesleptlikeaveritabletermite.

           Meanwhiletheblacks,leaningoverthissheetofwater,whichreflectedthelantern’slight,waitedforDickSandtoindicatetothemwhatshouldbedone.Hewasmeasuringtheheightoftheinundation.

           "Doubtless,Tom;butifwehavefivefeetofwaterwithin,thereareperhapssixorseven,evenmore,without."
