The Slave Trade

           Aperniciousclimate,warmanddamplands,whichengenderfevers,barbarousnatives,someofwhomarestillcannibals,apermanentstateofwarbetweentribes,theslave-traders’suspicionofeverystrangerwhoseekstodiscoverthesecretsoftheirinfamouscommerce;sucharethedifficultiestosurmount,thedangerstoovercomeinthisprovinceofAngola,oneofthemostdangerousofequatorialAfrica.

           Tuckey,in1816,hadascendedtheCongobeyondtheYellalaFalls;butoveranextentoftwohundredmilesatthemost.Thissimplehalting-placecouldnotgiveadefiniteknowledgeofthecountry,andnevertheless,ithadcausedthedeathofthegreaterpartofthesavantsandofficerswhocomposedtheexpedition.Thirty-sevenyearslater,Dr.LivingstonehadadvancedfromtheCapeofGoodHopeasfarastheupperZambesi.Thence,inthemonthofNovember,withahardihoodwhichhasneverbeensurpassed,hetraversedAfricafromthesouthtothenorthwest,clearedtheCoango,oneofthebranchesoftheCongo,andonthe31stofMay,1854,arrivedatSt.PauldeLoanda.ItwasthefirstviewintheunknownofthegreatPortugueseColony.

           Eighteenyearsafter,twodaringdiscovererscrossedAfricafromtheeasttothewest,andarrived,onesouth,theothernorth,ofAngola,afterunheard-ofdifficulties.

           Thefirst,accordingtothedate,wasalieutenantintheEnglishnavy,Verney-HowetCameron.In1872,therewasreasontofearthattheexpeditionoftheAmerican,Stanley,wasingreatdanger.IthadbeensenttothegreatlakeregioninsearchofLivingstone.
