IthasbeensaidthatthelogandthecompassweretheonlyinstrumentswhichDickSandcoulduse,soastoestimateapproximatelythewaymadebythe"Pilgrim."
Duringthisdaythenovicethrewthelogeveryhalf-hour,andhenotedtheindicationsfurnishedbytheinstrument.
Astotheinstrumentwhichbearsthenameofcompass,thereweretwoonboard.Onewasplacedinthebinnacle,undertheeyesofthemanatthehelm.Itsdial,lightedbydaybythediurnallight,bynightbytwoside-lamps,indicatedateverymomentwhichwaytheshipheaded—thatis,thedirectionshefollowed.
