Asallvisitorstothemansionareaware,thesepaintingsrepresentwomenofmiddleage,ofadatesometwohundredyearsago,whoselineamentsonceseencanneverbeforgotten.Thelongpointedfeatures,narroweye,andsmirkoftheone,sosuggestiveofmercilesstreachery;thebill-hooknose,largeteeth,andboldeyeoftheothersuggestingarrogancetothepointofferocity,hauntthebeholderafterwardsinhisdreams.
“Whoseportraitsarethose?”askedClareofthecharwoman.
“Ihavebeentoldbyoldfolkthattheywereladiesofthed’Urbervillefamily,theancientlordsofthismanor,”shesaid,“Owingtotheirbeingbuildedintothewalltheycan’tbemovedaway.”
