           Thedairymaidsandmenhadflockeddownfromtheircottagesandoutofthedairy-housewiththearrivalofthecowsfromthemeads;themaidswalkinginpatterns,notonaccountoftheweather,buttokeeptheirshoesabovethemulchofthebarton.Eachgirlsatdownonherthree-leggedstool,herfacesideways,herrightcheekrestingagainstthecow;andlookedmusinglyalongtheanimal’sflankatTessassheapproached.Themalemilkers,withhat-brimsturneddown,restingflatontheirforeheadsandgazingontheground,didnotobserveher.
