           Duringthesmallhoursofthenextmorning,whileitwasstilldark,dwellersnearthehighwayswereconsciousofadisturbanceoftheirnight’srestbyrumblingnoises,intermittentlycontinuingtilldaylightnoisesascertaintorecurinthisparticularfirstweekofthemonthasthevoiceofthecuckoointhethirdweekofthesame.Theywerethepreliminariesofthegeneralremoval,thepassingoftheemptywaggonsandteamstofetchthegoodsofthemigratingfamilies;foritwasalwaysbythevehicleofthefarmerwhorequiredhisservicesthatthehiredmanwasconveyedtohisdestination.Thatthismightbeaccomplishedwithinthedaywastheexplanationofthereverberationoccurringsosoonaftermidnight,theaimofthecartersbeingtoreachthedooroftheoutgoinghouseholdsbysixo’clock,whentheloadingoftheirmovablesatoncebegan.
