Whilstallthelandscapewasinneutralshadehiscompanion’sface,whichwasthefocusofhiseyes,risingabovethemiststratum,seemedtohaveasortofphosphorescenceuponit.Shelookedghostly,asifsheweremerelyasoulatlarge.Inrealityherface,withoutappearingtodoso,hadcaughtthecoldgleamofdayfromthenorth-east;hisownface,thoughhedidnotthinkofit,worethesameaspecttoher.

Atthesenon-humanhourstheycouldgetquiteclosetothewaterfowl.Heronscame,withagreatboldnoiseasofopeningdoorsandshutters,outoftheboughsofaplantationwhichtheyfrequentedatthesideofthemead;or,ifalreadyonthespot,hardilymaintainedtheirstandinginthewaterasthepairwalkedby,watchingthembymovingtheirheadsroundinaslow,horizontal,passionlesswheel,liketheturnofpuppetsbyclockwork.
Theycouldthenseethefaintsummerfogsinlayers,woolly,level,andapparentlynothickerthancounterpanes,spreadaboutthemeadowsindetachedremnantsofsmallextent.
