Nevertheless,becausehewaswhathewas—genial,complimentary,affectionate,butaplayboy,merely,andasoldieroffortune,withnodesiretomakeoverherlifeforheronanynewbasis—shewasnowgrievingoverthefutilityofthisromancewhichhadgothernowhere,andwhich,inallprobability,hadalienatedCowperwoodforgood.Hewasstilloutwardlygenialandfriendly,buttheirrelationshipwasnowcoloredbyasenseofmistakeanduncertaintywhichexistedonbothsides,butwhich,inAileen’scase,amountedtoasubtlespeciesofsoul-torture.
