           AmongthedirectorsoftheNorthChicagoCitycompanytherewasoneman,EdwinL.Kaffrath,whowasyoungandofaforward-lookingtemperament.Hisfather,aformerheavystockholderofthiscompany,hadrecentlydiedandleftallhisholdingsandpracticallyhisdirectorshiptohisonlyson.YoungKaffrathwasbynomeansapracticalstreet-railwayman,thoughhefanciedhecoulddoverywellatitifgivenachance.Hewastheholderofnearlyeighthundredofthefivethousandsharesofstock;buttherestofitwassodividedthathecouldonlyexerciseaminorinfluence.Nevertheless,fromthedayofhisentranceintothecompanywhichwasmonthsbeforeCowperwoodbeganseriouslytothinkoverthesituationhehadbeenstrongforimprovementsextensions,morefranchises,bettercars,betterhorses,stovesinthecarsinwinter,andthelike,allofwhichsuggestionssoundedtohisfellow-directorslikemeremanifestationsoftherecklessimpetuosityofyouth,andwerealmostuniformlyopposed.
