Cowperwoodfromhisyouthuphadhadacuriousinterestinquaintcharacters,andhewasinterestingtothem;they"took"tohim.Hecould,ifhechosetotakethetrouble,fithimselfinwiththeoddpsychologyofalmostanyindividual.InhisearlyperegrinationsinLaSalleStreetheinquiredafterclevertraderson‘change,andthengavethemonesmallcommissionafteranotherinordertogetacquainted.ThushestumbledonemorningonoldPeterLaughlin,wheatandcorntrader,whohadanofficeinLaSalleStreetnearMadison,andwhodidamodestbusinessgamblingforhimselfandothersingrainandEasternrailwayshares.Laughlinwasashrewd,cannyAmerican,originally,perhaps,ofScotchextraction,whohadallthetraditionalAmericanblemishesofuncouthness,tobacco-chewing,profanity,andothersmallvices.CowperwoodcouldtellfromlookingathimthathemusthaveafundofinformationconcerningeverycurrentChicagoanofimportance,andthisfactalonewascertaintobeofvalue.
