Itwasinterestingtonotehow,ablethoughhewas,andboundupwiththisvaststreet-railwayenterprisewhichwasbeginningtoaffectseveralthousandmen,hismindcouldfindintensereliefandsatisfactioninthepresenceandactionsofStephaniePlatow.Itisnottoomuchtosaythatinher,perhaps,hefoundrevivifiedthespiritandpersonalityofRitaSohlberg.Rita,however,hadnotcontemplateddisloyalty—ithadneveroccurredtohertobefaithlesstoCowperwoodsolongashewasfondofheranymorethanforalongtimeithadbeenpossibleforher,evenafterallhisphilanderings,tobefaithlesstoSohlberg.Stephanie,ontheotherhand,hadthestrangefeelingthataffectionwasnotnecessarilyidentifiedwithphysicalloyalty,andthatshecouldbefondofCowperwoodandstilldeceivehim—afactwhichwasbasedonherlackasyetofatrueenthusiasmforhim.Shelovedhimandshedidn’t.Herattitudewasnotnecessarilyidentifiedwithherheavy,lizardishanimality,thoughthathadsomethingtodowithit;butratherwithavague,kindlygenerositywhichpermittedhertofeelthatitwashardtobreakwithGardnerKnowlesandLaneCrossaftertheyhadbeensonicetoher.GardnerKnowleshadsungherpraiseshere,there,andeverywhere,andwasattemptingtospreadherfameamongthelegitimatetheatricalenterpriseswhichcametothecityinorderthatshemightbetakenupandmadeintoasignificantfigure.LaneCrosswaswildlyfondofherinaninadequatewaywhichmadeithardtobreakwithhim,andyetcertainthatshewouldeventually.
