A Matter of Tunnels
Outsideofthebridgecrushandthetunnelsabovementioned,therewasoneotherspecialconditionwhichhadbeenforsometimepastattractingCowperwood’sattention.ThiswasthewaningenergyoftheNorthChicagoCityRailwayCompany—thelackofforesightonthepartofitsdirectorswhichpreventedthemfromperceivingthepropersolutionoftheirdifficulties.Theroadwasinaratherunsatisfactorystatefinancially—reallyopentoacoupofsomesort.Inthebeginningithadbeenconsideredunprofitable,sothinlypopulatedwastheterritorytheyserved,andsoshortthedistancefromthebusinessheart.Later,however,astheterritoryfilledup,theydidbetter;onlythenthelongwaitsatthebridgesoccurred.Themanagement,feelingthatthelineswerelikelytobepoorlypatronized,hadputdownpoor,little,light-weightrails,andrunslimpsycarswhichwereascoldasiceinwinterandashotasstove-ovensinsummer.Noattempthadbeenmadetoextendthedown-townterminusoftheseverallinesintothebusinesscenter—theystoppedjustovertheriverwhichbordereditatthenorth.(OntheSouthSideMr.Schryharthaddonemuchbetterforhispatrons.HehadalreadyinstalledaloopforhiscableaboutMerrill’sstore.)AsontheWestSide,strawwasstrewninthebottomofallthecarsinwintertokeepthefeetofthepassengerswarm,andbutfewopencarswereusedinsummer.Thedirectorswereaversetointroducingthembecauseoftheexpense.
