WhenitcametoChicago,however,anditsswirling,increasinglife,Aileenwasmuchinterested.BetweenattendingtomanyfinancialmattersCowperwoodsawtoitthatshewasnotleftalone.Heaskedhertoshopinthelocalstoresandtellhimaboutthem;andthisshedid,drivingaroundinanopencarriage,attractivelyarrayed,agreatbrownhatemphasizingherpink-and-whitecomplexionandred-goldhair.Ondifferentafternoonsoftheirstayhetookhertodriveovertheprincipalstreets.WhenAileenwaspermittedforthefirsttimetoseethespaciousbeautyandrichnessofPrairieAvenue,theNorthShoreDrive,MichiganAvenue,andthenewmansionsonAshlandBoulevard,setintheirgrassyspaces,thespirit,aspirations,hope,tangofthefutureChicagobegantoworkinherbloodasithadinCowperwood’s.Alloftheserichhomesweresoverynew.ThegreatpeopleofChicagowereallnewlyrichlikethemselves.
