JosephineLedwell,asmartwidow,whocameprimarilytogambleontheBoardofTrade,butwhobegantoseeatonce,onintroduction,thecharmofaflirtationwithCowperwood.ShewasawomannotunlikeAileenintype,alittleolder,notsogood-looking,andofaharder,moresubtlecommercialtypeofmind.SheratherinterestedCowperwoodbecauseshewassotrig,self-sufficient,andcareful.Shedidherbesttolurehimontoaliaisonwithher,whichfinallyresulted,herapartmentontheNorthSidebeingthecenterofthisrelationship.Itlastedperhapssixweeks.Throughitallhewasquitesatisfiedthathedidnotlikehersoverywell.AnyonewhoassociatedwithhimhadAileen’spresentattractivenesstocontendwith,aswellastheoriginalcharmofhisfirstwife.Itwasnoeasymatter.
Itwasduringthisperiodofsocialdullness,however,whichsomewhatresembled,thoughitdidnotexactlyparallelhisfirstyearswithhisfirstwife,thatCowperwoodfinallymetawomanwhowasdestinedtoleaveamarkedimpressiononhislife.Hecouldnotsoonforgether.HernamewasRitaSohlberg.ShewasthewifeofHaroldSohlberg,aDanishviolinistwhowasthenlivinginChicago,averyyoungman;butshewasnotaDane,andhewasbynomeansaremarkableviolinist,thoughhehadunquestionablythemusicaltemperament.
