Toamanwhohasgonethroughagreatlifestruggleinonemetropolisandtestedallthephasesofhumanduplicity,decency,sympathy,andchicaneryinthecontrollinggroupofmenthatoneinvariablyfindsineveryAmericancityatleast,thetemperamentandsignificanceofanothergroupinanothercityisnotsomuch,andyetitis.LongsinceCowperwoodhadpartedcompanywiththeideathathumanityatanyangleorunderanycircumstances,climaticorotherwise,isinanywaydifferent.Tohimthemostnoteworthycharacteristicofthehumanracewasthatitwasstrangelychemic,beinganythingornothing,asthehourandtheconditionafforded.Inhisleisuremoments—thosefreefrompracticalcalculation,whichwerenotmany—heoftenspeculatedastowhatlifereallywas.Ifhehadnotbeenagreatfinancierand,aboveall,amarvelousorganizerhemighthavebecomeahighlyindividualisticphilosopher—acallingwhich,ifhehadthoughtanythingaboutitatallatthistime,wouldhaveseemedrathertrivial.Hisbusinessashesawitwaswiththematerialfactsoflife,or,rather,withthosethirdandfourthdegreetheoremsandsyllogismswhichcontrolmaterialthingsandsorepresentwealth.HewasheretodealwiththegreatgeneralneedsoftheMiddleWest—toseizeupon,ifhemight,certainwell-springsofwealthandpowerandrisetorecognizedauthority.
